One buyer we interviewed put it this way: “You can't look at any payments solution today and not see the words Agentic Commerce.”
We took the question to the people doing the deploying, mining Qualitate’s agentic commerce expert discussions with merchants, fintechs, and payments leaders.
Spend in the Agentic Commerce market over the next 12 months debuted at the 97th percentile across all enterprise software markets in our 1H ‘26 data collection. The conversations behind that number range from whiteboard sketches to a live pilot where a digital assistant books your trip end to end.
We ran the question through Qualitate’s Research Analyst: How are merchants and fintechs thinking about agentic commerce adoption in 2026? We asked the agent to look at where deployments actually stand, which vendors are winning infrastructure decisions, and what's holding back autonomous checkout.
Research Analyst reasons across Qualitate's library of structured discussions with senior technology buyers, the executives and decision-makers evaluating, procuring, and running these platforms right now. Every figure below traces back to an underlying conversation you can open and read.
Buyers aren’t expecting ROI yet. One expert compared the moment to the first pitch of a baseball game, and said firms that skip the learning curve now will end up “the pets.com” of agentic commerce. Another described going from “whiteboard level, if that” six months ago to now treating it as a future revenue driver.
Most merchants are starting with discovery. Higher-ticket sellers want their products in the path of AI agents that research on a buyer’s behalf, and they still expect a human to take the payment. Fintechs are further along. One is building a platform where agents initiate, authorize, route, and settle payments with no humans involved, a category the expert says didn’t exist 18 months ago. A travel OTA is piloting agent-booked trips on its existing APIs.
Specialized vendors have a trust problem. Merchants would rather build in-house on AWS or Azure than hand their negotiation logic to a startup. One consultant said their clients don’t trust the new vendors at all, and that a hyperscaler version of the same product “would probably gain some fairly big traction on just the trust factor alone.” Just a month later, AWS previewed agentic payments on Bedrock.
Traditional risk engines are flagging agents as bots. Multi-session agentic checkouts get flagged as credential stuffing, and the false-positive declines show up in GMV throughput metrics. One buyer moved away from Adyen, calling it “too focused on traditional human-to-merchant optimization,” a gap that the payments incumbents are now racing to close.
Contracts are shifting to usage. Seat licenses are giving way to pricing tied to token consumption and transaction volume. One buyer's spend now tracks GMV throughput plus the API call volume needed for real-time inventory and pricing sync.
Stripe is becoming the payment rail for agent-initiated transactions; one buyer picked it alongside Skyfire for “Know Your Agent” cryptographic verification, and another likes that its idempotency handling stops double charges when an agent retries.
Shopify gets chosen for its Model Context Protocol, which exposes structured product catalogs directly to LLMs.
Salesforce comes up most among incumbents. Buyers credit Agentforce with keeping agent sprawl down and workflows auditable.
On the frontier sit two machine-to-machine payment standards, Coinbase's x402 and Stripe/Tempo's MPP, built for agents paying for services online and both still early.
The download includes the two adoption tracks, the vendor shortlist with buyer quotes behind each finding, the six barriers holding back deployment, and the shift from seats to usage-based pricing.
